A Hug of a Film That Feels Like a Warm Reminder of Love’s Many Shades

Metro In Dino is more than a sequel in spirit to Life in a… Metro. It’s an emotional ensemble that immerses us in the very essence of modern relationships — messy, flawed, complex, and still deeply hopeful. Set across Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore, the film beautifully ties together stories of couples navigating infatuations, heartbreak, rediscovery, and healing.

At its heart, the film believes in one simple truth: that real love is about falling for the same person over and over again, through different versions of ourselves.

Metro in dino The Story & Themes

Anurag Basu’s narrative unfolds through four parallel love stories:

  • Shibani and Parimal (Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher), college sweethearts rediscovering companionship in their golden years.

  • Kajol and Monty (Konkona Sen Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi), a couple confronting harsh truths and egos in a mature marriage.

  • Shruti and Akash (Fatima Sana Shaikh and Ali Fazal), facing modern love’s fragility and emotional voids.

  • Chumki and Parth (Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur), millennials dealing with impulsiveness, fear of commitment, and emotional baggage.

Each story is laced with realism, vulnerability, and a generous dose of empathy. These aren’t perfect people. But it’s their very flaws that make their love stories relatable and affecting.

Script & Screenplay

Writers Sandeep Shrivastava and Samrat Chakravarthy lend life to Anurag Basu’s vision through thoughtful dialogue and emotionally intelligent storytelling. The film never screams for attention. Instead, it unfolds gently, letting the audience sink into its rhythm.

While the second half feels slightly stretched, it never loses emotional grip. The writing explores themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, emotional independence, and most importantly—space in relationships.

Performances That Carry the Film

This is one of those rare films where almost every actor hits the right note. Among the standouts:

  • Pankaj Tripathi brings subtle humor and tenderness to Monty.

  • Konkona Sen Sharma is razor-sharp as Kajol, both vulnerable and defiant.

  • Aditya Roy Kapur delivers arguably his most emotionally nuanced performance yet.

  • Sara Ali Khan charms as a confused yet grounded Chumki — playful, real, and layered.

Neena Gupta, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Darshana Banik leave strong impressions in their respective arcs, while Anupam Kher and Ali Fazal do falter slightly in parts, seeming too controlled. But the overall performances collectively create a rich, lived-in world.

Direction & Music

Anurag Basu once again proves why he remains one of India’s most innovative storytellers. Like his previous works (Barfi!, Jagga Jasoos, Ludo), he thrives in multi-character stories without losing depth. His direction is compassionate, fluid, and beautifully observant.

His use of intercut narratives—sometimes matching characters by emotion rather than geography—adds to the immersive experience.

Pritam’s music, consistent with his long-standing collaboration with Basu, is emotionally resonant and woven into the film’s fabric. While songs like Dhaagina Tinak Dhin and Aur Mohabbat Kitni Karoon may not have long shelf lives, they perfectly elevate scenes within the film.

Final Verdict

Metro In Dino is a deeply human, refreshingly mature take on relationships. It doesn’t glamorize love — it dissects it, celebrates it, and even mourns it.

It’s a rare Hindi film that blends emotion, realism, music, and hope so seamlessly — making it not just a watch, but an experience. If you’ve ever loved, lost, or tried to start over, Metro In Dino will speak to you. Loudly. Silently. And tenderly.

Watch it — in metros, small towns, or anywhere the heart can relate.
