What’s Good: The underlying message that even naughty or flawed children can attain distinction in adult life, and that childhood should be guilt-free yet aware, while school prepares you for the outside world more than being just about books and examinations. A subtle message thus goes out to parents and teachers to remain friendly and understanding guides to their children more than mere disciplinarians.
What’s Bad: This film that craved for skilled editing, and has horrendous (can’t think of any other word) music!
Loo Break: Therefore, quite frequently in many stretched sequences. At 2 hour- plus, this one could have been crisply told in about 90 minutes.
Watch or Not?: Do you have to write about it? If yes, do watch it. Otherwise, we learn its messages anyway in the school called ‘Life’!

What an opportunity this was to send great messages to viewers on the game called ‘Life’! Rahul Sinha (Rohit Saraf), the protagonist (adult role by John Abraham, who is also one of the film’s producers) is an impulsive guy with a volatile temper. Slowly but surely, he gets on the wrong side of his girlfriend, classmate Milky (Sanjana Sanghi) and his closest friend, Joy (Adarsh Gourav) as he navigates triumphs (like successfully writing the school play) and failures besides complications. These include friction with his parents and getting needlessly involved in fights with classmates and with a local ruffian named Dalu (Zeishan Quadri).
The script does focus on normal teenage issues like watching porn, trying out cigarettes, petty grudges, insecurities and jealousies and romantic passion, but the pace is uneven, though some aspects like silent love are dealt with sensitively.
Essentially, the film tries to show every aspect of teenage life and is set in Jamshedpur, Bihar, and its prime institute, Loyola, a missionary school. But it fails to infuse both emotional and contextual depth in the narration. In the climax too, the film tries to be quirkily humorous but fails.
All in all, the script should have been worked upon with a lot of contemplation. This film has been held up for about a decade, and it examines Rahul’s times a decade and more before that. In that sense, the script does not feel dated, to its credit, as the topic is timeless. And obviously, the mobilephone and social media that influence teenagers today, are missing.

We tend to confuse length of a role with performance quality—I say this because, for me, the brightest contribution (apart from Rohit Saraf) comes from Charu Bedi as Shalini, the girl on whom Rahul has his first crush. Ironically when he has a girlfriend, she begins to like him! I loved the way she looks at him, her eyes speaking volumes, and her expressions all suggesting a potentially great talent to watch for.
Of course, the best performance come from Rohit Saraf (seen of late as an adult in Mismatched and Vikram Vedha), a proven actor in the past who truly understands his character deeply and emotes every mood and shade very expressively. Another actor who has already shown great promise is Adarsh Gourav (now as a full-fledged adult in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and Guns & Gulbaas et al), who plays Rahul’s best friend, Joy. With his earnest expressions and way of speaking, he is perfect as a simple guy who suffers due to no fault of his though he has a golden, giving heart.
Sanjana Sanghi as Milky is quite good, and I rather liked Keval Arora as Father Pius Coelho and the actors who played Rahul’s and Milky’s fathers.
John Abraham as the grown-up Rahul comes in for a cameo, but his character needed a co-star to round off the story, and much more detailing about why the school was honouring him as an exemplary and distinguished ex-student.

The director, Sajid Ali, is the younger brother of Imtiaz Ali, and has last directed Laila Majnu, a non-starter in 2018, which he claims was actually ghost-directed by his more famous brother, and the web series, Dr. Arora. But technically, this is his first film, and the rawness can be seen in the way he pays scant attention to connectivity with his audience.
Any genre of movie needs to focus on what will keep the viewer riveted throughout the narration, and the content (and idea) alone is not enough. The basic axiom in a commercial art like cinema is that what one is making is not meant for viewing only by self, family, friends and unconditional admirers. And at every step of the scripting one must think of multiple aspects like what to say, how much to elaborate and which way to express whatever we need to convey to the viewer.
The music (Joi Barua and possibly others) is the most randomly done affair, with rather esoteric lyrics, especially in English. The syntax of a Hindi film song is woefully missing. It seems that the composer(s) just fiddled on the omnipresent guitar, a beautiful instrument that, however, is not really conductive for the creation of a proper Indian melody, to spin out songs where vital stress on accent, diction and even the grammar of the composition (!) are completely sidetracked.

It is alright to have a fresh idea and a passion for newness, but that is not enough to make a decent film. Such offbeat subjects are lucky in that they have an OTT platform nowadays, and this one could have really scored a high.
